Each time you create a new Topic, add to an existing Topic or view a Topic you will have an opportunity to receive email notification whenever there is any response since the last time you visited that Topic. Here are the ways to subscribe:

  • While you are creating a new Topic one of the options below the Message body text box is "Notify me when a reply is posted". Click on the box to add a checkmark for this option and you will receive emails whenever any post(s) are added to this Topic.
  • When add a reply to an existing Topic you will also have the option below the Message body text box to "Notify me when a reply is posted". Click on the box to add a checkmark for this option and you will receive emails whenever any post(s) are added to this Topic.
  • Even if you are just viewing a existing Topic You will see a link just below the "newtopic" button that says "Subscribe topic". Click on this link and the link will change to "Unsubscribe topic". This indicates your subscription for this Topic is active.
  • If you wish to be notified every time any new posts appear in a forum (even new topics) the you can subscribe to a whole forum. View the Forum you wish to subscribe to. You will see a link just below the "newtopic" button that says "Subscribe forum". Click on this link and the link will change to "Unsubscribe forum". This indicates your subscription for this Forum is active.
  • You can see a list of active subscriptions by clicking on the "User Control Panel" link at the top right of each page and then selecting "Overview" and then "Manage Subscriptions".

That's it! Once you are subscribed you will receive an email with a link to take you directly to the new post in your subscribed Topic each time someone replies to your Topic. Once you get a notification email no further emails will be sent until you view your Topic. This saves you from getting repeated emails for a Topic which is active. Each time you view the Topic your subscription is reset and you will get another single email the first time a new post is added after you logout.

TEST SUBSCRIPTIONS HERE! : If you would like to test to make sure subscriptions work for you then

  • Login as a Registered user of the BlackSeaGR forums
  • Click on the "postreply" button below to start a new post
  • Type in "Hello World" to the Message body text box ;)
  • Click on the box to the left of the "Notify me when a reply is posted" option. A checkmark will appear.
  • Click on the "Submit" button
  • One of our forum administrators will make a "Subscription Test" post to this Topic and you should receive the email notifying you your subscription is working.
  • Then Click on the "Unsubscribe topic" link and carry on enjoying our forum! :D

One other tip for subscriptions:
When you a viewing a list of Topics in a sub-forum you will notice a "Subscribe forum" link under the "newtopic" button. Clicking on this link will change the link to "Unsubscribe forum" and it will also subscribe you to *all* current Topics *and* any new Topics in the that whole forum or sub-forum.

This will allow you to catch situations like someone creating a new Topic for a surname that already has an existing Topic. You will get an email notification and be able to contact the the researcher to redirect him/her over to the main Topic about that surname. The same applies to villages and area forums and sub-forums.

Caution: As the BlackSeaGR forums get more busy this could result in a lot of emails.

Good question Ted :)

Searching for features on our pbpbb forum software is always complicated by the fact that the developers are constantly upgrading the function and adding new features to the product and it has hundreds of official and unofficial modifications (MODs). To answer your question, at this point in time it seems RSS is not supported in our version (we have the lastest version with all the security fixes) but a number of MODs exist to add this feature. We will consider this feature for a future enhancement of the BlackSeaGR forums but modifying our phpbb program causes support issues so I am not expecting this to happen any time soon. If a number of our users ask for this feature that would help.
