Ancestry (http://www.ancestry.com/name-origin?surname=woehl) Says:

"Woehl ... Name Meaning ... South German (also Wöhl): variant of Wölke (see Wolke).

Source: Dictionary of American Family Names ©2013, Oxford University Press"

I also suggest checking the books "Deutsche Namenkunde by Max Gottschald" and "Deutsches Namenlexikon by Hans Bahlow". They are available at the LDS library and various other libraries in the world. See http://www.worldcat.org/ for which libraries carry these books. I have found the Bahlow book the most helpful as it has an English version. Unfortunately I do not possess a copy of these books just a few pages of photocopies related to my surname.

The correct german surname for Woehl is Wöhl. For researching Woehl and Wohl can be used. In my research I have the same problem that I have different writing for one family.
Regards :P

I am researching the "Wöhl" name as well. Mine came from the villages of Alexanderhilf and Neu Freudental. It appears based on the research that I have done if the spelling was translated as "woehl" they came from the Beresan District and "wohl" from the Grossliebental District. I have not been able to make a connection with the families from Beresan District and families from Grossliebental District.
