Hello, new member searching Volk family in ND, notably Grant and Morton Co.ND. Margaretha Volk (1880-1908) m. James Waldron (Waldon) abt. 1897/98 in (possibly Grant/Morton). I believe her parents were Josef Volk (1831-1920) and Margaret Shaeffer (1840-1909). This is conjecture based on Margaretha Volk Waldron's daughter living with Frank (Franz) Volk in the 1910 census, listed as "niece." I am interested in the village in Russia, or ideas on what Catholic church they might have attended. The Volks, (according to 1900 Federal Census) immigrated in 1888. I found her brother, Frank Volk's marriage to Barbara Feist in the Catholic Germans from Russia book by Ted Becke (1995), as well as various baptisms for his children. Any ideas appreciated.

Hello Mary,
Could this be your Margaretha?
From http://odessa3.org/collections/ships/link/grhspass.txt:
For the query, volk margaret, of category Immigration
File: 1,788,016 GR Passengers in GRHS Publications (A. Brosz)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shipno Name Age From Destination
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
00214 VOLK Margaret 33 Mannheim, Kuts. Dakotas ??
...
Shipno "00214" from http://www.odessa3.org/collections/ship ... hsship.txt :

00214 Fuerst Bismarck 11-Nov-1898 New York, NY 1987 GHRV 17,3 44

Her birth works out to 1865 in this record so probably not but if you wish to follow up the "GRHV" reference is to the Heritage Review publication of the GRHS.org society. HR Issue 17-3 is not online as far as I know. For further details about this ship list contact GRHS at http://grhs.org/aboutus/contact.html and ask them about getting a copy of page 44 of that 1987 Heritage Review.

Thank you so much for the lists of the Volk passengers. The older ones might work for the parents. I am researching Margaretha Volk, but even that name may be inaccurate, as I only have the 1900 census as the proof, and have no other records for her. The 7 yr old Magdalena Volk from Elsass, Kuts going to the Dakotas looks promising.(She named her daughter Magdalena!) Thanks for the help!
